Kokikai Aikido of Chicago
|
Kokikai Aikido classes are an enjoyable form of exercise in a relaxed atmosphere. Practice is non-competitive and friendly so that men and women of different ages, sizes, fitness levels, and levels of experience can practice together comfortably. Practice should be physically and mentally challenging, but at a level appropriate to the student’s age and fitness level. There are no competitions, matches, or weight classes. A typical class has three parts. The first part (about 10 minutes) consists of warm-up exercises and light stretching, which reduce the risk of injury in the more vigorous movements to come. The second part (about 10 minutes) consists of Ki Development exercises that teach and develop basic movement with mind-body coordination. The remainder of the class concentrates on applying mind-body coordination to self-defense techniques. Each technique is demonstrated by the instructor and then practiced by the class in partners or in groups. The more experienced partner has the responsibility to ensure that practice is safe and enjoyable for both partners. In addition to self-defense techniques, students learn to roll safely and comfortably. Students also learn deep breathing and meditation exercises that improve calmness, relaxation, and concentration. Occasionally classes include practice with bokken (wooden sword), jo (wooden staff), and tanto (wooden knife). There are bokken and jo kata (routines) that are particularly good for improving posture and relaxation. |
